Welcome to Commander (feat. the Pod) is Sunset Galaxy’s love letter to late-90s nu-metal and the unforgettable chaos of Commander nights.

Inspired by bands like Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit, the track combines crushing guitars, rap verses and singalong choruses with references every Magic: The Gathering player will recognize—from Sol Ring and Cabal Coffers to board wipes, topdecks and the immortal line:

“Pay two… or it fizzles.”

Released to coincide with MagicCon Amsterdam 2026, this is the soundtrack to every Commander table.

There are songs about fantasy.

There are songs inspired by video games.

But somehow, nobody had ever written the soundtrack to a Commander night.

That’s where Welcome to Commander (feat. the Pod) began.

Every week, our playgroup gets together to shuffle up, topdeck, board wipe, celebrate ridiculous combos and laugh at the unforgettable moments that only multiplayer Commander can create. At the same time, we all grew up on the late-90s and early-2000s nu-metal scene—bands like Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit that still remind us of LAN parties, burned CDs and old MP3 players.

One evening those two worlds collided.

Colin picked up his old LTD Viper guitar, plugged it in, tuned it to Open D and wrote the opening riff. The song quickly evolved into a collaboration between Sunset Galaxy and the Pod—our Commander crew made up of Colin (Master Wizard), Rense (PascaL), Jessica (Unruly Rebel) and Roel, whose now-iconic line “Pay two… or it fizzles.” became the heart of the track.

Rather than creating a parody, we wanted to write a song that genuinely sounds like it escaped from 2001—only this time it’s about Commander.

The lyrics are packed with references every Magic player will recognize: Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers, Black Lotus, Sol Ring, Counterspell, Wrath of God, Armageddon, Commander damage and, of course, the stack.

We deliberately released the song to coincide with MagicCon Amsterdam 2026, hoping it would become part of someone’s convention playlist, Commander night or road trip to the event.
